F. Schubert – Symphony No. 3
D. Shostakovich – Concerto for Piano, Trumpet, and String Orchestra

Schubert was a great composer of melodies. His songs — more than six hundred — helped define musical Romanticism. But he was also a classicist, rooted in the Viennese tradition. Here we revisit his Symphony No. 3, in which this classical facet prevails, marked by formal precision and lively dialogue between the orchestral sections. Each turn of the page reveals clever and creative solutions.

And since classicism is the theme, the program opens with Haydn’s first cello concerto — though transfigured through the trumpet of Sergei Nakariakov, a virtuoso performer who continues to expand the repertoire of his instrument. In a more irreverent register, pianist Vasco Dantas joins him to perform Shostakovich’s double concerto. Eclectic, humorous, perhaps satirical… this work blends popular and classical sounds. Near the end, one can distinguish a playful quotation from a Piano Sonata by Haydn himself.
